Dear doctors,

We are pleased that we have aroused your interest in our hospital Verbundkrankenhaus Bernkastel / Wittlich. Below you will find information about the entry possibilities with us as well as a guide about a work permit as a physician in Germany.

You have different opportunities to work with us:

1. Visiting Physician program and clinical elective:

  • You can complete your clinical elective / medical traineeship (so-called Famulatur) with us as well as a visiting physician program. In the case of a voluntary visiting physician period, you can individually arrange a period of between two weeks and two months. During that time, you will receive free meals and free accommodation in our staff dormitory. You do not need a language certificate for the clinical elective and the visiting physician program, however, a German language level of at least B2 would be desirable.
  • You can get to know the entire process of inpatient therapy with us through the clinical elective or visiting physician program. Familiarize yourself with day-to-day work processes in our facility and gain insights into the German healthcare system. You will also gain insights via the ongoing team meetings and take part in these.
  •  Acceptance for clinical electives and visiting physician program is subject to qualification of the applicant and avail-ability. All contact persons of our medical departments can be found on our homepage www.verbund-kranken-haus.de under the tab "Medicine and Care" - resp. medical department - contact -

Of course, you can too apply directly via the job board on our homepage.

2. Direct entry:

  • We offer many opportunities to work as a doctor with us - after successfully completing your medical studies - and will support you with the formalities. While you are waiting for all the important confirmations (license to practice medicine or professional permit), you can enjoy an early familiarization with us within the frame-work of a visiting physician program. In that period, you will receive a monthly "pocket money" of 200.00 euros. This familiarization period will introduce you to topics such as writing doctor's letters and conducting admission interviews. You will participate in team meetings. In the supervisions and ward-rounds you will be given assistance for your day-to-day work. We offer all foreign employees a professional and job-related German language-course once a week.

After approval of your license to practice medicine or professional permit, you should find out more about:

1. Work and residence permit: Doctors from the EU area require neither a work permit nor a residence permit. This has also applied to doctors from Romania and Bulgaria since 01.01.2014. For all others, there is now a simplified pro-cedure, the so-called EU Blue Card.

2. Health insurance: You will need health insurance for your employment. There are two different health insurance systems in Germany (statutory and private health insurance). You can find more information at: http://www.krankenkassen.net/private-krankenversicherung/unterschied-pkv-gkv.html

3. Pension insurance: As soon as you start working as a doctor, you become a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Medical Association, the Trier District Medical Association and the Trier Medical Pension Fund. Physicians each pay 50% of the pension insur-ance contribution (currently 18.6% of the gross monthly salary) into the physicians' pension scheme (a so-called occu-pational pension scheme). This means that 9.30% is automatically paid into the physicians' pension scheme. In order to ensure this automatic payment, an application for exemption must be submitted to the German Pension Insurance. You will find further information on this topic on the website of the Ärzteversorgung Trier: http://www.ve-trier.de

4. Income tax ID: As soon as you found a residence and registered at the registration office at your local municipality, you will automatically receive an income tax ID by the tax authorities. You can find more details on the website of the Federal Central Tax Office: https://www.bzst.de/DE/Privatpersonen/SteuerlicheIdentifikationsnummer/steuerlicheidentifikationsnummer_node.html#js-toc-entry2
